Fire door safety week, which runs from 25th September – 1st October 2017, aims to raise awareness of the critical role that fire doors play in protecting property and saving lives. Now more than ever, fire door safety should be taken seriously with only three months since the devastating inferno at Grenfell tower which tragically killed at least 80 people.
More than one third of fire-related fatalities from April 2015 to March 2016 (where the cause of death was known) was due to victims being “overcome by gas or smoke” (Source: FIRE05046). This is the therefore the most common cause of fire-related fatalities. The simple purpose of a fire door in every day use is just as any standard door. However the fire door, unlike any other door, must additionally perform its prime purpose. That is to protect lives and offer protection to the remainder of the building and other buildings in the event of a fire.A fire door is a fire-resistance rating used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a structure and to enable safe passage from a building or structure.Correct installation of fire doors is critical to performanceThe correct installation of fire door sets is fundamental to their overall performance. This is because it will ensure the fire door will maintain its fire integrity rating in the event of a fire.
