For Calm + Chaos, a high-end gym and wellness space in Surrey, SWD was appointed to supply a complete package of bespoke internal doors and locker doors.
The brief called for doors that complemented the warm, considered interiors while also meeting the more technical requirements of a commercial fitness environment. From oversized stained oak doors to specialist acoustic solutions between the studios, each element was designed to balance aesthetics with performance.

Bespoke Doors
Throughout the space, our Model C27 was selected in a stained oak finish, with matching frames and architraves creating a consistent look across each area. At 2.4 metres high, the doors have generous proportions that suit the scale of the interiors, while selected doors connecting the studio spaces were manufactured at 1 metre wide. The stained oak brings warmth and texture to the scheme, sitting alongside the neutral finishes and darker architectural details used throughout the gym.

Hardware & Finishing Details
Dark bronze hardware was specified throughout, providing a subtle contrast against the oak. The package included a combination of push plates, pull handles, lever handles and overhead closers, selected according to the function of each door. By supplying the doors, frames, architraves and hardware as one coordinated package, we were able to ensure consistency in both finish and detailing throughout the project.

Acoustic Performance
With different classes and training sessions taking place simultaneously, acoustic performance was an important consideration, particularly around the Pilates and main gym studios. The studio doors were manufactured as acoustic door sets, incorporating double acoustic seals and acoustic drop-down seals to provide additional sound insulation between the spaces. This allowed the doors to retain the same design and finish as those used elsewhere in the gym, while providing the enhanced performance required for their location.

Bespoke Locker Doors
Alongside the main door package, SWD also supplied the locker doors within the changing areas. Using complementary finishes and detailing across both the architectural doors and lockers helped create a more cohesive interior, with the joinery feeling considered as part of the wider scheme rather than as a separate element.

The SWD Approach
Commercial and hospitality projects often require more from a door than appearance alone. Fire ratings, acoustics, durability, accessibility and hardware requirements all need to be considered alongside the overall interior design. Calm + Chaos demonstrates how these technical requirements can be incorporated without detracting from the design. The oversized proportions, stained oak finish and dark bronze detailing give the doors a strong architectural presence, while specialist acoustic construction provides the performance needed within the studio spaces.

The Finished Result
The finished scheme reflects the considered approach taken throughout Calm + Chaos: warm, understated and highly functional. From the 2.4-metre-high stained oak doors to the bespoke locker fronts and acoustic studio door sets, each element was designed to sit naturally within the interiors while responding to the practical demands of a busy, high-end gym.
