The Return of Bespoke Entrances in Contemporary Homes

The Return of Bespoke Entrances in Contemporary Homes

For many years contemporary homes embraced a more understated approach to entrance design. Flush detailing and standard-sized openings reflected the wider architectural trends of the time, with the front door often becoming a secondary feature rather than a defining one.

Today, that approach is beginning to change and as homes become larger and increasingly personalised to the people who live within them, entrances are once again being given the attention that they deserve. Homeowners are looking beyond standard dimensions in favour of bespoke designs that complement the scale of the property and introducing carefully selected materials which create a stronger first impression.

What's particularly interesting is that this renewed appreciation isn't being driven by nostalgia; instead, it's being shaped by a growing recognition that bespoke joinery remains just as relevant within contemporary homes as it does within period properties. Rather than recreating the past, designers are instead reinterpreting these principles for modern living; with beautiful results.

Unique Entrances Built Around Modern Homes

As homes have evolved, so too have the expectations placed on the entrance itself. Double-height halls and wider openings have all challenged the limitations of standard-sized doors; creating a growing demand for bespoke designs that meet proportions of elongated properties.

This philosophy can be seen throughout SWD's Contemporary Collection. The restrained simplicity of the Timka, the expressive panelling of the Charlotte and the broad horizontal emphasis of the Satini, can all adapt naturally to taller and wider openings. Rather than becoming visually overwhelming as their dimensions increase, each design retains a balanced appearance; demonstrating how bespoke manufacture allows scale and aesthetics to work together. Together, they show that contemporary entrances don't need to be elaborate to feel impressive. Often, it's thoughtful craftsmanship that leaves the strongest impression.

Making an Entrance with Internal Doors

When SWD introduced the Palm Beach Collection, its objective wasn't to create another internal door collection inspired by the design trends already associated with Florida's luxury homes. Instead, the collection began with a different question: what could British craftsmanship bring to a market already defined by soft coastal palettes and familiar contemporary styling?

The SWD team decided to look inward and traditional British joinery became the starting point; drawing inspiration from English heritage. The result was a combination of natural materials and richer timeless tones with complementary bold detailing and hardware. This fusion created a collection that feels like a distinctive blend of aesthetics from both sides of the Atlantic.

Designs such as The Vista and The Cabana both demonstrate this mix but in very different ways. The Vista embraces traditional British joinery through its arched form and solid timber construction; creating an entrance with a strong sense of English familiarity. The Cabana, meanwhile, offers a more intricate approach, pairing an oversized opening with bronze framing and glazed glass panels to establish definition whilst also maintaining openness between spaces. Despite their contrasting appearances, both doorsets are distinct; resulting in internal entrances that feel equally suited to a contemporary Florida residence or a bespoke home much closer to SWD's Surrey workshop. They are also a reminder that great design doesn't always come from following trends and in fact sometimes, the strongest ideas come from revisiting the principles that have stood the test of time.

Traditional Doesn't Mean Old Fashioned

One of the biggest changes in recent years is that traditional entrance doors are no longer reserved for listed buildings or country estates. Increasingly, they're also being specified for contemporary self-builds where homeowners are looking to introduce warmth and individuality rather than creating a purely minimalist facade.

Doorsets such as the Kensington, Harrow and Royale demonstrate why this approach works so well. Their classic designs and traditional style of hardware provide a natural contrast to modern materials such as render and glass; creating entrances that introduce a heritage feel to even the most contemporary homes.

It’s this contrast which has become one of the defining characteristics of contemporary British homes. Rather than treating traditional and modern as opposing styles, homeowners are combining the two to create properties with greater personality. Clean architectural forms are softened by natural timber and handcrafted classic door designs bring permanence to homes that might otherwise feel overly minimal. Perhaps that's why traditional entrance design continues to resonate. It isn't about recreating the past; it's about introducing materials and craftsmanship that make contemporary properties feel more established from the moment that you arrive home.

Whilst contemporary architecture naturally continues to evolve, many of the principles behind great entrance design have remained remarkably consistent. Long before minimalist facades and oversized glazing became commonplace, British homes were defined by beautifully crafted entrances that were designed to complement the architecture surrounding them.

A Bespoke Entrance for Every Home

An entrance should reflect the individuality of the homeowner and whether it’s a doorset for an oversized contemporary entrance or restoring a period property; every SWD doorset can be configured around the home itself. Dimensions, materials, glazing, hardware and surrounding joinery are all considered together to make sure that each design feels fitting within its setting rather than selected from a catalogue of standard options.

As homeowners continue to invest in properties that reflect their own way of living, bespoke entrances are once again becoming one of the defining features of contemporary design. Not because they're larger or more elaborate but because they combine enduring craftsmanship and timeless British design; which creates homes that feel distinctive from the very first impression.
